When your child experiences a dental injury, every moment matters. A knocked-out tooth, a chipped smile from a playground fall, or bleeding from a bicycle accident can transform an ordinary day into a parent’s worst fear. In those heart-pounding moments when you’re trying to comfort your frightened child while figuring out what to do next, you need a dental team that understands both the urgency of the situation and the unique needs of children facing dental trauma.

At All Kids Pediatric Dentistry, our pediatric dentists have been providing emergency dental trauma treatment to families in Charlotte, Mint Hill, Plaza Midwood, Southwest Charlotte, Indian Trail/Monroe, and surrounding communities since 2014. We offer immediate care for knocked-out, fractured, and other dental injuries, as well as all types of pediatric dental emergencies, helping children recover their smiles and parents find peace of mind during stressful situations.

What Types of Dental Trauma Do Children Experience?

Dental injuries in children come in many forms, each requiring different treatment approaches. Understanding the type of trauma your child has experienced helps you know what to expect and how urgently to seek care. Our team sees various dental injuries daily and has the training and equipment to handle each situation with skill and compassion.

Knocked-Out Teeth (Avulsed Teeth)

A completely knocked-out tooth represents one of the most time-sensitive dental emergencies. For permanent teeth, quickly replacing the tooth offers the best chance of saving it. Baby teeth are typically not replaced, but your child still needs an immediate evaluation to ensure the permanent tooth developing underneath is okay.

Chipped or Fractured Teeth

Tooth fractures range from minor chips to breaks that go deeper into the tooth. Small chips may need simple smoothing or bonding, while deeper fractures often need more care, such as bonding to restore the tooth’s shape and protect it from sensitivity and infection.

Displaced or Loosened Teeth

Sometimes a dental injury doesn’t knock a tooth out completely but pushes it out of position or loosens it in the socket. These luxation injuries require careful assessment to determine whether the tooth can be repositioned or if other treatment is necessary. We monitor these situations closely because the tooth’s position affects both immediate comfort and long-term development.

Soft Tissue Injuries

Dental trauma often involves injuries to the lips, gums, cheeks, or tongue. While these injuries can look alarming due to bleeding, many heal well with proper care. However, deep lacerations may require stitches, and any dental injury should be evaluated to ensure no teeth have been affected, even if they initially appear intact.

What Should You Do Before You Arrive at Our Office?

Knowing what to do in those first moments can make a real difference in how well your child’s tooth heals. Take a deep breath and follow these simple steps as you head to see us.

If your child knocks out a permanent tooth, find the tooth and pick it up by the white part you can see when they smile, not the root. Rinse it gently with water if it’s dirty, but don’t scrub it. If you can, try placing it back in the socket and have your child bite gently on the gauze to hold it in place. If that’s not possible, put the tooth in a cup of cold milk or your child’s saliva and bring it with you.

For a chipped or broken tooth, rinse your child’s mouth with water, and apply a cold compress to the lip or cheek if it’s swollen. If you find the broken piece, put it in milk or water and bring it along. Then call us right away so we can see your child as soon as possible.

How Do Pediatric Dentists Treat Dental Trauma?

Treatment for dental injuries varies based on what happened, whether the tooth is a baby tooth or a permanent tooth, and your child’s age. Our approach always focuses on saving natural teeth whenever possible while ensuring your child feels safe and comfortable throughout. We’re here to help, not just fix teeth.

Emergency Assessment and Stabilization

When you arrive at our office with a dental emergency, we conduct a thorough examination to understand the full extent of the injury. This assessment includes visual examination and digital X-rays of all teeth and soft tissues to identify all areas of damage, not just the apparent injuries. This comprehensive evaluation ensures we don’t miss hidden damage that could cause problems later.

Treatment for Knocked-Out Permanent Teeth

When a permanent tooth is knocked out, bring it to us quickly. We’ll clean the area, put the tooth back in, and hold it in place with a special support while it heals. The tooth usually stays supported for one to two weeks. We’ll schedule follow-up visits to ensure everything is healing well and to watch for any problems.

Repairing Fractured Teeth

For small chips, we’ll smooth rough edges and may add tooth-colored material to restore the tooth’s appearance and protect it. Deeper breaks that reach the inside of the tooth need more care to remove damaged tissue and prevent infection. After that treatment, we often add a protective covering to keep the tooth strong.

Managing Displaced Teeth

Teeth that have been pushed out of position or loosened often need to be moved back and held in place while they heal. We’ll watch these teeth carefully as they recover because they need special attention. Some heal on their own with minimal help, while others need more active treatment.
