Between a baby’s first tooth and a teenager’s last appointment before adulthood, a child’s mouth goes through more changes than most parents realize. Baby teeth give way to permanent ones, spacing shifts, new vulnerabilities appear, and what a child needs from their dental care at age two looks nothing like what they need at age eight or twelve. A practice that only does well with toddlers is not a practice built to take a child all the way through.

All Kids Pediatric Dentistry has been caring for children at every stage of that journey since 2014. Our team of six pediatric dentists serves Shannon Park and the surrounding Plaza Midwood communities from our location just minutes away, and we have built our practice around the idea that every child deserves consistent, expert-level care from infancy through adolescence. We accept virtually all insurance plans, proudly serve NC and SC Medicaid patients, and will always work with families to find a solution when coverage falls short. Our in-house dental savings plan is available for families without insurance, and our multilingual team speaks Spanish, Russian, and Portuguese. The Stages Most Parents Do Not Plan For

A child’s dental development unfolds in predictable stages, but the transitions between them are where problems tend to sneak in. According to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, tooth decay remains the most common chronic disease in children, even though it is largely preventable. A lot of that prevention comes down to staying ahead of what is happening in your child’s mouth at each stage, not reacting after a problem has already taken hold.

Our pediatric dental team walks Shannon Park families through what to watch for as primary teeth arrive, how to protect them while they are present, and what the transition to permanent teeth means for your child’s oral health going forward. These conversations happen at every visit because the information worth knowing changes as your child grows.

How We Follow Your Child Through Every Stage

Shannon Park families come to us with children of all ages, and our practice is built to meet each of them exactly where they are.

The Early Years

We welcome children from their very first tooth, ideally by their first birthday. Early visits are low-stakes and parent-focused. We assess what is happening, demonstrate age-appropriate home care, and set expectations for the months ahead. Our infant and toddler dental visits are designed to help children build a comfortable, familiar relationship with the dental office long before any real treatment is ever needed.

The Mixed Dentition Years

Between ages six and twelve, children are simultaneously losing baby teeth and gaining permanent ones. This window matters enormously. Permanent teeth are erupting into the space baby teeth leave behind, and if that space is compromised by early loss or crowding, the long-term effects on alignment can be significant. Our tooth eruption management and space maintainer services exist specifically to monitor and support proper spacing and eruption of permanent teeth during this phase. Catching problems early in this stage is far easier than addressing them later.

The Adolescent Years

Teenagers are at a higher risk for cavities than many parents expect, in part because dietary habits shift and home care routines often get less consistent. Our dental exams and cleanings continue to be the cornerstone of care through the teen years, and we pair them with targeted preventive treatments like dental sealants and fluoride treatments designed to protect the permanent teeth your child will carry for the rest of their life.

Every stage of care at our practice comes with the same thoughtful, unhurried approach Shannon Park families have come to expect from us.

What Happens Between Stages

Some of the most important moments in a child’s dental development happen in the in-between times, when one phase is winding down and another has not fully begun. A tooth that is slow to erupt, a gap left by an early loss, or a habit like thumb-sucking that has continued longer than ideal can all have downstream effects on permanent teeth if they are not addressed at the right time. Our orthodontic space management services are designed to catch these issues during the window when intervention is simplest, before permanent teeth are fully committed to a position.

We also offer silver diamine fluoride treatment for managing early decay without drilling, and our pediatric dental team takes time at each visit to counsel parents on what to watch for before the next appointment. No issue sits unaddressed simply because it does not fit neatly into a standard cleaning visit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Shannon Park families often come to us with questions about what to expect as their child grows. Here are the ones we hear most.

At What Age Should My Child Start Seeing a Pediatric Dentist?

By their first birthday or within six months of their first tooth appearing, whichever comes first. The earlier we meet your child, the better positioned we are to stay ahead of issues at every stage.

Yes. We serve both NC and SC Medicaid patients at all of our locations, and every child receives the same level of care regardless of their coverage.

We accept virtually all insurance plans and will work with every family to find a solution that fits their situation. Our in-house dental savings plan is available for those without coverage.

Not necessarily, but it is worth paying attention to. When baby teeth are lost early or unevenly, permanent teeth can drift into the wrong position. That is exactly what our tooth eruption management and space maintainer services are designed to monitor and address.
