Losing a baby tooth a little early might seem harmless, but what happens in that gap over the next several months can have a lasting effect on how your child’s permanent teeth come in. When a primary tooth is gone before the permanent one is ready to take its place, the surrounding teeth can begin to drift, closing off the space that the incoming tooth needs. A space maintainer is a small dental appliance designed to hold that space open so your child’s smile can develop the way it should.
At All Kids Pediatric Dentistry, serving families throughout Charlotte, Arrowood, and Southwest Charlotte since 2014, our pediatric dentists take a thoughtful, unhurried approach to every treatment recommendation. We believe parents deserve a clear understanding of why a space maintainer may be needed and exactly what the process involves. You can learn more about how we approach care on our pediatric dentistry page. All Kids. All Smiles.
Baby teeth do far more than help children chew. They act as natural guides, holding the space in the jaw where permanent teeth are waiting to erupt. When a primary tooth is lost too soon due to decay, injury, or extraction, the neighboring teeth have nothing to stop them from gradually shifting into that empty space.
Over time, this movement can reduce the room available for the permanent tooth, leading to crowding, misalignment, or teeth that grow in at an angle. According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, the use of space maintainers to reduce the severity of these concerns following premature loss of primary teeth is a recommended course of action. Addressing the space early is a much simpler path than correcting shifting teeth later on.
Gentle, comprehensive dental care for children with flexible payment options for growing families.
Space maintainers come in a few different forms depending on which tooth was lost and where it was located in the mouth. Our pediatric dentists will evaluate your child and recommend the option that fits their specific situation. There are two main categories families should understand.
The options most commonly considered include the following:
Our team will walk you through whichever option is recommended and answer all your questions before moving forward.
The process of fitting a space maintainer is straightforward and comfortable for most children. During the appointment, our pediatric dentists will take measurements and, for fixed appliances, fit a small metal band around the anchor tooth. The appliance is then secured in place using dental cement, and we check the fit to make sure it is comfortable and positioned correctly.
For children who feel nervous about dental visits, we offer sedation dentistry options to help them stay relaxed during the appointment. Most children are comfortable throughout the process and leave the office with no significant discomfort. The whole appointment is typically brief, and your child can return to normal activity the same day.
Once a space maintainer is in place, keeping it clean is a simple part of your child’s regular routine. Brushing around the appliance carefully twice a day and flossing as instructed helps prevent plaque from building up around the band. It is also important to avoid sticky or hard foods that could loosen or damage the appliance.
We recommend scheduling routine dental exams and cleanings so our team can monitor the space maintainer and check that everything is progressing as expected. As the permanent tooth moves into position, we will let you know when the appliance is ready to be removed. Our pediatric dental FAQs page has additional guidance on what to expect between visits.
Parents often come to us with questions before their child’s appointment, and we are always happy to take the time to talk through each one.
Not always. Our pediatric dentists evaluate each situation individually, taking into account which tooth was lost, how much space remains, and where the permanent tooth is in its development. In some cases, a space maintainer may not be necessary.
The placement process is gentle and should not be painful. Some children feel mild pressure during fitting, but discomfort afterward is uncommon. If your child experiences any soreness, it typically resolves within a day or two.
The appliance stays in place until the permanent tooth has moved into the correct position, which varies from child to child. Our team monitors progress at each visit and will remove the appliance when the time is right.
Many insurance plans include coverage for space maintainers as part of pediatric dental benefits. We accept virtually all insurance plans and also offer a dental savings plan for families without coverage.
