Most parents know baby teeth matter, but many are surprised to learn that dental visits should begin well before a child’s first birthday. The early years are when the foundation for lifelong oral health is built, and the habits, guidance, and care a child receives in those first few visits can shape how their smile develops for years to come. Starting early is one of the simplest things a family can do to set their child up for a healthy mouth.

All Kids Pediatric Dentistry has been welcoming infants and toddlers in the Charlotte area since 2014, and our pediatric dentists are proud to serve young families in Arrowood and throughout Southwest Charlotte with gentle, age-appropriate care from the very beginning. Our offices are designed to feel calm and kid-friendly, and our team knows exactly how to make even the tiniest patients feel right at home. All Kids. All Smiles.

When Should My Baby Have Their First Dental Visit?

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that parents establish a dental home for their infant by 12 months of age, with the first visit happening within six months of the first tooth’s eruption. That first tooth typically appears around six months, which means many children should be seen before they even turn one.

Starting dental visits this early may feel surprising, but there are real reasons behind the recommendation. Baby teeth can develop cavities very quickly once they erupt, and early childhood caries, also called tooth decay in young children, is one of the most common chronic conditions affecting kids in the United States. A visit in year one gives our team the chance to catch early concerns, provide preventive care, and equip parents with the guidance they need to keep those little teeth healthy.

What Happens at an Infant or Toddler Dental Visit?

A visit for a very young child looks quite different from a standard dental appointment, and that is intentional. Our goal is to make the experience gentle, informative, and low-key so your child begins building a positive relationship with the dentist from the very start.

During the first visit, our pediatric dentists will complete a thorough oral examination to check for any early signs of decay, evaluate how the teeth and gums are developing, and assess any oral habits such as thumb sucking or pacifier use. We will also apply fluoride varnish if indicated to help protect those new teeth. Just as important as the clinical portion is the time we spend with you as parents. We walk through age-appropriate brushing techniques, talk about diet and feeding habits that affect oral health, and answer any questions you have about what to expect as your child grows.

Why Are Baby Teeth So Important?

One of the most common questions we hear from parents is why baby teeth need so much care if they are just going to fall out anyway. The answer is that baby teeth do far more than most people realize.

Baby teeth help children chew and eat properly, support clear speech development, and hold the space in the jaw needed for permanent teeth to come in correctly. When a baby tooth is lost too early due to decay or injury, the surrounding teeth can shift into that space and affect how the permanent tooth erupts. Keeping baby teeth healthy through preventive care protects not just the primary smile but the permanent one that follows.

How We Make Infant and Toddler Visits Comfortable

Our team understands that tiny patients have tiny attention spans and big feelings, and we approach every visit with that in mind. We never rush, we use simple language to explain what we are doing, and we follow the child’s lead when it comes to pacing. Many infants are examined while resting in a parent’s lap, which keeps them close to the person they trust most, while our team gets a good look.

For toddlers who feel a little nervous, we take extra time with the get-to-know-you part of the visit before anything clinical begins. The goal is always for your child to leave feeling good about their experience, so the next visit comes with a little less hesitation. We also offer sedation dentistry options, including nitrous oxide, for toddlers who need additional comfort and support during treatment if the situation arises.

Frequently Asked Questions About Infant and Toddler Dental Visits

Parents of young children often come to us with questions before that first appointment. Here are some of the ones we hear most often.

My Baby Only Has Two Teeth. Do They Really Need to See a Dentist?

Yes. Even one or two teeth can develop cavities, and those first teeth are the starting point for monitoring how your child’s mouth is developing. A brief early visit also gets your child comfortable with our team long before any real treatment might be needed.

Use a soft-bristled infant toothbrush and a tiny smear of fluoride toothpaste, about the size of a grain of rice. Brushing twice a day gently, and before bed, is especially important since saliva flow decreases overnight. Our team will walk you through the technique during your visit.

Crying is completely normal and does not mean the visit went poorly. Our team is well-practiced at completing a gentle, efficient exam even when a child is expressing their feelings loudly. We will always communicate with you throughout the visit so you know what is happening and why.

Most young children benefit from visits every six months, though some children with higher cavity risk may benefit from more frequent check-ins. Our team will recommend a schedule based on what we observe at the first visit.
