A chipped tooth from a fall, a knocked-out tooth during a soccer game, or a hard collision at the playground can happen in an instant, and when it does, parents need to know exactly where to turn. Dental trauma in children is more common than many families realize, and how quickly and carefully it is addressed can make a meaningful difference in the outcome for the affected tooth. Whether the injury involves a baby tooth or a permanent one, getting your child seen by a pediatric dentist as soon as possible is always the right first step.

At All Kids Pediatric Dentistry, serving families throughout Charlotte, Ayrsley, and Southwest Charlotte since 2014, our pediatric dentists are equipped to assess and treat a wide range of dental injuries in children of all ages. We know these moments can feel unsettling for both parents and kids, and we work hard to create a calm, reassuring environment from the moment your family walks through our door. You can learn more about how we approach urgent situations on our pediatric dental emergencies page. All Kids. All Smiles.

What Types of Dental Trauma Are Common in Children?

Children experience dental injuries in a variety of ways, and the type of injury determines what treatment is needed. Falls, sports collisions, and accidents around the home are among the most frequent causes. Some injuries affect only the outer structure of the tooth, while others involve the root or surrounding gum and bone tissue.

The most common types of dental trauma our team sees include the following:

  • Chipped or fractured teeth: A break in the enamel or deeper layers of the tooth, ranging from minor surface chips to more significant fractures that expose the inner tooth structure.
  • Luxation injuries: The tooth is still in the socket but has been loosened, pushed inward, shifted sideways, or partially pushed out of position.
  • Avulsion: The tooth is completely knocked out of the socket. This is one of the most urgent dental injuries and requires immediate attention.
  • Root fractures: A break within the root of the tooth that may not be visible without X-rays but can affect the long-term health of the tooth.
  • Soft tissue injuries: Cuts or lacerations to the gums, lips, tongue, or inside of the cheeks that may accompany a tooth injury.

Each situation is unique, and our team evaluates the full picture before recommending a course of treatment.

What Should Parents Do Immediately After a Dental Injury?

The steps you take in the first few minutes after a dental injury can have a direct impact on the outcome, especially if a permanent tooth has been knocked out. According to guidelines for managing traumatic dental injuries endorsed by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, prompt and correct emergency management is essential for the best possible results following a dental trauma.

If a permanent tooth has been knocked out, handle it by the crown and avoid touching the root. If it is dirty, rinse it gently with milk or saline without scrubbing. Keep the tooth moist by placing it in milk or between the cheek and gum if your child is old enough to cooperate safely, and get to our office immediately. For baby teeth that have been knocked out, do not attempt to reinsert the tooth, as replanting a primary tooth can interfere with the developing permanent tooth below. Call us right away, and we will guide you through the next steps.

How Is Dental Trauma Treated?

Our pediatric dentists walk families through every step of the evaluation and treatment process so there are no surprises along the way.

Evaluating the Injury

When your child arrives at our office following a dental injury, our first priority is a thorough assessment. Our pediatric dentists will examine the affected tooth or teeth, check the surrounding gum and bone tissue, and take digital X-rays to get a complete picture of what is happening beneath the surface. This evaluation guides every treatment decision that follows.

Treatment Options for Injured Teeth

Treatment depends entirely on the type of injury, the tooth involved, and your child’s overall dental development. Minor chips in baby teeth may only require smoothing or bonding, while more significant fractures in permanent teeth may call for a crown or more involved restoration. Luxated teeth are often repositioned and stabilized with a temporary splint. In cases where the pulp of a permanent tooth has been affected, additional treatment such as a pulpotomy may be recommended to preserve the tooth long-term.

Follow-Up and Monitoring

Dental trauma often requires follow-up visits to monitor healing and watch for any changes to the tooth or surrounding structures over time. Our team will create a clear follow-up schedule so nothing goes undetected. Many traumatized teeth heal well with the right care and monitoring, and our goal is always to preserve your child’s smile wherever possible.

Should I Go to the Emergency Room or a Pediatric Dentist?

For isolated dental injuries without significant facial trauma or loss of consciousness, a pediatric dentist is the appropriate first call. If your child has sustained a head injury, is disoriented, or has significant facial swelling, seek medical attention first and then contact us.

Yes. Baby teeth still deserve prompt attention. A traumatized primary tooth can affect the developing permanent tooth underneath if not properly assessed and managed. We understand that children may be in distress after a dental injury. Our team is patient and experienced in helping children feel calm. We also offer sedation dentistry options for children who need additional support during treatment.
