A dental emergency with your child can happen in an instant. One moment they’re running at the park or playing with friends, and the next you’re searching for answers about a knocked-out tooth, sudden swelling, or pain keeping them up at night. All Smiles.

What Counts as a Pediatric Dental Emergency?

Not every bump or tooth concern requires a same-day visit, but some situations genuinely cannot wait. Knowing the difference helps you respond confidently when something unexpected happens. Pediatric dental emergencies vary in severity, and our team is here to help you sort through the urgency of any situation.

Some of the most common dental emergencies we see include the following:

  • Knocked-out permanent tooth: Time is critical here. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, a permanent tooth has the best chance of being saved when placed back into the socket within 15 minutes of the injury. Keep the tooth moist in milk and call us right away.
  • Severe toothache: Pain that keeps your child up at night or makes eating impossible is a sign something needs attention soon.
  • Facial swelling: Swelling around the jaw, cheeks, or gums may indicate an infection that needs prompt care.
  • Chipped or broken tooth: If a piece breaks off, save the fragment and contact us as soon as possible.
  • Tooth pushed out of position: A displaced tooth needs to be evaluated quickly to protect the surrounding teeth and tissues.

If your child is experiencing any of these situations, do not wait. Call our office and we will work to get them seen the same day.

How Should You Handle a Dental Emergency Before You Arrive?

Stay calm and assess the situation

The most important thing you can do in the first few minutes of a dental emergency is stay composed. Children often take their cues from parents, and a steady, reassuring presence will help your child stay calm as well. Gently rinse your child’s mouth with warm water to clear any blood or debris. If there is bleeding from the gums or lips, apply gentle pressure with a clean cloth or piece of gauze.

Handle a knocked-out tooth carefully

If a permanent tooth has been knocked out, find it as quickly as possible and pick it up by the crown, avoiding the root. Rinse it gently without scrubbing and, if you can, place it back in the socket. If that is not possible, keep the tooth in a cup of milk and head to our office immediately. For baby teeth, the recommendation is different since reimplanting them is not advised, but you should still contact us so we can check for any damage to the surrounding area.
