What Is a Dental Sealant?
A dental sealant is a thin, protective coating painted directly onto the chewing surfaces of the back teeth. It bonds into the grooves and pits on top of the molars and hardens into a smooth barrier that keeps food particles and bacteria from settling in. The application process is quick, painless, and does not require any drilling or removal of tooth structure.
Sealants are most commonly applied to permanent molars shortly after they come in, but they can also be placed on primary (baby) teeth for children at higher risk of decay. The first permanent molars typically arrive around age six, and the second set comes in around age twelve, making those two windows the most important times to consider sealants.
How Effective Are Sealants at Preventing Cavities?
The evidence behind sealants is strong. According to the CDC, dental sealants can prevent up to 80% of cavities in the back teeth during the first two years after application, and they continue to protect against roughly half of cavities for up to four years. Nine out of ten cavities in children occur on the back teeth, which makes those surfaces the most important ones to protect.
Despite how effective sealants are, less than half of all children and adolescents in the United States currently have them. That gap represents a significant amount of preventable tooth decay, which is one reason our team talks about sealants at routine visits and helps families understand whether their child is a good candidate.
Does Every Child Need a Sealant?
Not necessarily, and that is something we assess individually at every dental exam and cleaning visit. Sealants tend to benefit children most when one or more of the following apply:
- A history of cavities: Children who have had decay before are more likely to develop it again, making sealants a smart preventive step.
- Deep molar grooves: Some teeth have naturally deeper pits that are harder to clean, even with consistent brushing.
- Developing brushing habits: Younger children who have not yet mastered brushing technique benefit from the added protection sealants provide.
- A diet higher in sugar or starch: What children eat has a direct impact on cavity risk, and sealants help offset some of that exposure.
For children with shallower grooves and strong oral hygiene, the recommendation may look different. Our team evaluates each child’s teeth, age, and risk factors before making any suggestion, and we only recommend sealants when there is a clear benefit.
How Long Do Sealants Last?
Sealants can last several years with proper care, and they can be reapplied if they wear down or chip over time. Our team checks the condition of existing sealants at every visit and lets you know if any need attention.
Pairing sealants with other preventive care tools like fluoride treatments gives your child a well-rounded layer of defense. Sealants block the grooves on top, fluoride strengthens enamel from within, and consistent brushing takes care of the surfaces in between.
