Sealants are most commonly applied to permanent molars shortly after they come in, but they can also be placed on primary (baby) teeth for children at higher risk of decay. The evidence behind sealants is strong. According to the CDC, dental sealants can prevent up to 80% of cavities in the back teeth during the first two years after application, and they continue to protect against roughly half of cavities for up to four years. Despite how effective sealants are, less than half of all children and adolescents in the United States currently have them. - Deep molar grooves: Some teeth have naturally deeper pits that are harder to clean, even with consistent brushing.
- Developing brushing habits: Younger children who have not yet mastered brushing technique benefit from the added protection sealants provide.
- A diet higher in sugar or starch: What children eat has a direct impact on cavity risk, and sealants help offset some of that exposure.
For children with shallower grooves and strong oral hygiene, the recommendation may look different. Our team evaluates each child’s teeth, age, and risk factors before making any suggestion, and we only recommend sealants when there is a clear benefit.
What Happens During a Sealant Appointment?
Placing a sealant is quick and comfortable, and most children tolerate it well since there is no drilling, freezing, or discomfort involved. Our team cleans and dries the tooth, applies a gel that helps the sealant material bond to the enamel, rinses and dries the tooth again, then paints on the sealant material and hardens it with a curing light. Most teeth take just a few minutes to complete, and your child can eat and drink normally right afterward.
What Are Sealants Made Of, and Are They Safe?
Modern dental sealants are made from a BPA-free resin material that bonds to the tooth enamel and hardens under a curing light. They do not interfere with a child’s bite, growth, or enamel development, and they do not replace the need for fluoride, since sealants create a physical barrier rather than remineralizing the tooth the way fluoride does. Used together, sealants and fluoride cover two different parts of cavity prevention.
How Long Do Sealants Last?
Sealants can last several years with proper care, and they can be reapplied if they wear down or chip over time. Our team checks the condition of existing sealants at every visit and lets you know if any need attention.
